10 OCTOBER 2026

Celebrating our environment, championing environmental justice, and renewing our shared responsibility to protect the natural heritage that sustains us all.
Mazingira Day is observed annually on 10th October in Kenya as a national public holiday dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainability. The Swahili word mazingira means “the environment.”
The day calls on individuals, communities, institutions and businesses to work together to restore forests, protect water sources, reduce pollution and preserve natural resources for present and future generations.
At its heart is the principle that every Kenyan has a right to a clean and healthy environment and a responsibility to help safeguard it.
A healthy environment is the foundation of a healthy society, a resilient economy and a sustainable future.
Our Shared ResponsibilityEnvironmental stewardship is more than conservation. It is an investment in public health, economic resilience, justice and the well-being of generations to come.
Protecting the right to a clean and healthy environment.
Restoring forest cover, biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
Supporting communities as they respond to climate challenges.
Safeguarding water sources, fertile soil and food systems.
Using natural resources responsibly and reducing waste.
Ensuring future generations inherit a healthy, thriving environment.
Laws and constitutional safeguards provide important mechanisms for protecting natural resources, promoting accountability and ensuring that development respects environmental rights.
Article 42 recognises the right to a clean and healthy environment, including the protection of the environment for the benefit of present and future generations.
Upholding the constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment.
Supporting compliance with the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA).
Promoting lawful environmental assessment where required for projects.
Encouraging transparency, compliance and accountability in natural resource management.
Meaningful environmental change begins with practical action. Every contribution, however small, can help create a cleaner Kenya.
Grow indigenous and fruit trees, and care for them until they mature.
Help keep neighbourhoods, rivers, public spaces and waterways clean.
Minimise waste, avoid unnecessary plastics and dispose of waste responsibly.
Participate in community forest associations and credible conservation initiatives.
Encourage responsible practices in workplaces, businesses and development projects.
Help safeguard rivers, wetlands and other vital water ecosystems from pollution.
On this Mazingira Day, Wambui Gichui & Co. Advocates reaffirms its commitment to promoting environmental justice, legal compliance and sustainability. Through legal awareness, advocacy and ethical practice, we support a Kenya where the right to a clean and healthy environment is protected for everyone.
From all of us at Wambui Gichui & Co. Advocates, we wish every Kenyan a meaningful and impactful Mazingira Day. Let us move beyond celebration and turn our shared responsibility into lasting action.
Tujenge Kenya yetu. Tujenge mazingira yetu. Let’s build our Kenya. Let’s build our environment.
