02 Origin of the International Day of Democracy
The International Day of Democracy originated from the Universal Declaration on Democracy, adopted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in September 1997.
Following subsequent international efforts to promote and consolidate democracy, the United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 62/7 adopted on 8 November 2007, declared 15 September as the International Day of Democracy.

In a recent event in Kenya, democracy and the rule of law were demonstrated in the High Court in Katiba Institute v Attorney-General & Others (Petition No. E333 of 2026), wherein the proceedings concerned the proposed establishment of an Ebola quarantine and treatment facility.
The Court issued conservatory orders concerning the proposed facility, reflecting the role of the courts in providing oversight where the exercise of public power is challenged.
The government was required to comply with the Court’s orders.
